Ankara:Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian discussed the potential for an agreement with the United States during a call with Russian President Vladimir Putin. He indicated that such a deal is achievable if the US adheres to international legal frameworks.
According to Anadolu Agency, the conversation between the two leaders covered various topics, including regional developments, ongoing Iran-US negotiations, and bilateral relations. Pezeshkian briefed Putin on the Iran-US negotiations mediated by Pakistan, highlighting Washington's 'double standards and maximalism' as significant obstacles to a fair agreement.
Pezeshkian expressed Iran's readiness to reach a 'balanced and fair' agreement to ensure lasting peace and security in the region, emphasizing the importance of Iran's national interests and the rights of its people. He also described Gulf countries as Iran's 'brothers' and lamented the use of US military bases in those countries for attacks against Iran. Tehran, he said, is prepared to collaborate with neighboring countries for regional peace and security without external powers' involvement.
Putin reiterated Russia's support for diplomatic efforts, emphasizing the necessity of respecting Iran's sovereignty and territorial integrity. He expressed Moscow's readiness to assist in finding a diplomatic solution and backed Tehran's demands for compensation for war damages and long-term security guarantees.
The leaders confirmed their commitment to expanding cooperation under the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership Treaty, signed in January 2025, to strengthen ties in trade, energy, transport, and security. They also agreed to maintain close coordination in international forums.
Previous hostilities erupted between the US-Israel and Iran in late February, followed by an initial agreement in June mediated by Pakistan and Qatar. However, the agreement's implementation has stalled due to disagreements on security and navigation in the Strait of Hormuz.
