Riyadh:Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim has strongly condemned the Yemeni Houthi group's attack on Riyadh's main airport, which resulted in at least 12 fatalities and over 300 injuries.
According to Anadolu Agency, Anwar Ibrahim stated that there is no justification for targeting civilians and civilian infrastructure. He expressed concern that risking innocent lives only exacerbates the suffering caused by the ongoing conflict and extends it to areas that should remain untouched.
Anwar also affirmed Malaysia's solidarity with Saudi Arabia and its citizens during this critical time. He emphasized Kuala Lumpur's commitment to diplomacy and reason in hopes of preventing the conflict from escalating further.
New Zealand's Foreign Minister Winston Peters also condemned the attacks on the airport and other locations in Saudi Arabia. He described the assaults on civilians and infrastructure as "completely deplorable" and expressed solidarity with the Saudi people and government.
The attack, which occurred on Saturday, claimed the lives of four Saudis, two Bangladeshis, and one person each from the US, Egypt, Jordan, Syria, Palestine, and Sudan, as reported by the Saudi civil aviation authority. The injured are receiving medical care, with some in critical condition.
Following the attack, the Saudi civil aviation authority temporarily suspended airport operations to assess damage and ensure the safety of the facilities. This suspension has led to flight disruptions, and passengers are advised to verify flight statuses with airlines. Kuwait Airways canceled its services to and from Riyadh on Saturday, citing the airport's closure.
The incident comes amid rising tensions due to recent Houthi missile and drone attacks on Saudi airports and other facilities.
