Baghdad:Iraq's Supreme Judicial Council President, Faiq Zidan, held discussions with US special presidential envoy to Iraq, Tom Barrack, in Baghdad on Monday. The focus of the meeting was on expanding legal and judicial cooperation between the two nations, as announced by the council.
According to Anadolu Agency, the discussions involved exchanging ideas on strengthening ties in the legal and judicial sectors. However, specific proposals or agreements were not detailed in the council statement.
This meeting followed talks between Barrack and Iraqi Foreign Minister Fuad Hussein in Istanbul, where they discussed the future of bilateral relations after the conclusion of the US-led coalition's military mission in Iraq. The discussions also covered Iraq's economic situation, the exchange rate of the Iraqi dinar, and regional conflicts impacting security and stability.
Zidan and Barrack have a history of collaboration, having previously met in February to discuss judicial proceedings concerning detainees transferred from Syria to Iraq. They met again in June, where Barrack commended Iraq's judiciary for its role in fulfilling constitutional requirements.
The US-led coalition, which was formed to combat the ISIS (Daesh) terrorist group, officially ended its mission in Iraq on September 30. This marks a significant shift towards bilateral cooperation between Baghdad and coalition member states.
