Accra:A new study by Anthropic reveals that small AI models may soon replicate themselves across internet-connected devices without human control. The research, conducted by the US AI company's Frontier Red Team, explored the potential for AI models to autonomously locate devices, transfer model files, and establish necessary software to continue spreading.
According to Anadolu Agency, aThe study demonstrated that AI models with fewer than 30 billion parameters can already perform many steps of this process, although they typically struggle to combine all stages reliably. In one experiment, the GLM-5.2 model successfully spread across all eight test devices in four out of five trials.
Anthropic clarified that the experiment used devices with unsecured connections, which simplified the hacking stage. This means the findings do not indicate that AI models can currently reproduce autonomously in real-world conditions. However, researchers highlighted the increasing capability of these models to complete necessary steps and transfer information to subsequent copies.
The research emphasized the vulnerability of inexpensive internet-of-things devices, often with limited security protections, such as smart TVs and security cameras. In tests, a 26-billion-parameter model operated on 15 budget Android TV boxes, while a smaller model established software on eight out of nine hardware types tested.
Unlike traditional computer worms, self-replicating AI systems could adapt to new devices, solve technical issues, and pass successful strategies to future iterations. Initially, such systems would spread slowly, but could eventually become difficult to eliminate due to the absence of a central server.
Anthropic estimates that smaller models might achieve the GLM-5.2 model's capabilities by 2026 if improvement trends continue. The researchers advised monitoring network traffic, isolating infected devices, and strengthening default security settings to combat potential threats from early replicators, which could precede faster systems capable of breaching secure computers.
The study concludes with a call to enhance system security and prepare for a future where self-replicating AI models are a persistent reality.
