Police Conduct Investigations Launched Amid French Student Protests

Lyon:France's police watchdog has initiated 36 investigations into police conduct following nationwide protests by high school students, as reported by the BFMTV broadcaster.

According to Anadolu Agency, the protests have led to significant demonstrations, including an event in Lyon with 11,000 participants. During this protest, nine individuals were arrested, and five were injured, including four police officers or gendarmes. Authorities reported that several hundred people engaged in violent actions, targeting street furniture, businesses, and security forces with projectiles.

Interior Minister Laurent Nunez defended the actions of the police, stating in a parliamentary session that arrests are made only when demonstrations result in violence or damage. He emphasized that peaceful protests do not lead to police detentions.

Education Minister Edouard Geffray highlighted the involvement of 88,000 high school students in a government consultation platform aimed at gathering young people's concerns.

Meanwhile, CGT union leader Sophie Binet called for a nationwide strike and demonstrations on November 5, advocating for higher wages, increased funding for public services, and the withdrawal of what she termed an austerity budget.
