Baku:Eight US states have initiated legal action against OpenAI, accusing the company of endangering children through its ChatGPT chatbot and misleading parents regarding its safety. Iowa, Kansas, Nebraska, and West Virginia announced their lawsuits at a news conference, while Arkansas, Arizona, Idaho, and Montana filed their suits in state courts.
According to Anadolu Agency, Iowa Attorney General Brenna Bird expressed concerns about ChatGPT giving dangerous medical advice and encouraging harmful behavior, describing these actions as deceptive. She emphasized that the lawsuit aims to protect children and hold OpenAI accountable under state law.
West Virginia Attorney General JB McCuskey echoed similar concerns, accusing OpenAI of endangering children and violating state consumer protection laws. He highlighted the lack of safeguards in conversations about sensitive topics such as suicide and school shootings.
Nebraska Attorney General Mike Hilgers criticized OpenAI for promoting ChatGPT as safe for minors despite its serious flaws leading to harmful outcomes. He stated that the lawsuit aims to enforce Nebraska law on OpenAI as it would on any other company.
The lawsuits collectively seek to require OpenAI to adhere to state consumer protection laws and halt what the attorneys general describe as dangerous and unlawful conduct.
