French Police Prepared to Use Stun Grenades Amid Anticipated Protests

Paris:French Interior Minister Laurent Nunez announced that police might deploy stun grenades in response to anticipated "urban violence" during a national mobilization planned for Saturday.

According to Anadolu Agency, Nunez emphasized on France 2 that police and gendarmes need access to all intermediate weapons for the upcoming demonstrations. However, the use of one grenade type has been suspended after a high school student was injured, losing a hand, as reported by BFMTV.

Territorial intelligence services outside Paris estimate that between 50,000 and 100,000 people could participate in demonstrations across the country. In Paris alone, between 20,000 and 40,000 attendees are expected. Nunez mentioned that he anticipates a "fairly significant mobilization," with 250 demonstrations and 80 marches authorized, alongside over 40 declared protests.

The mobilization seeks to address concerns over rising fuel prices, decreasing purchasing power, and the decline in public services, as noted by France Info. Calls for participation have been circulating on social media, particularly among students, farmers, firefighters, healthcare workers, and retirees, with high school student protests acting as a catalyst. Some Yellow Vest movement leaders have reportedly encouraged a "convergence of struggles and generations."
