Accra:Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) Navy announced that a second supertanker encountered a naval mine and caught fire in the Strait of Hormuz. The incident involved a tanker carrying over 2 million barrels of crude oil, which had reportedly turned off its positioning and radar systems while navigating an 'unauthorized' route.
According to Anadolu Agency – English, the explosion occurred in the vessel's engine room, leaving the tanker unable to move. The IRGC has not disclosed the name of the vessel, nor provided details about the crew, casualties, or potential environmental impact.
This incident follows a similar event where another supertanker was reported to have hit a naval mine under similar circumstances in the same strategic waterway. Iran has enforced restrictions on certain shipping routes through the Strait of Hormuz, a move that has been contested by the United States and its regional allies, who assert the right to freedom of navigation in this critical energy transit corridor.
