Doha:US special envoy Tom Barrack stated that a US ground intervention in Yemen's conflict involving the Houthis 'appears pointless,' while emphasizing Washington's logistical support to Saudi Arabia.
According to Anadolu Agency – English, Barrack highlighted the need for Middle Eastern countries to form regional alliances rather than depend on the US to solve their issues. He discussed the US's shift away from direct intervention in the Middle East towards supporting regional countries in managing their security.
Barrack also questioned the effectiveness of military intervention against the Houthis, suggesting that negotiations involving Saudi Arabia, the group, and regional mediators would be a better alternative. Additionally, he addressed the US's desire for a peaceful agreement with Iran and stressed the importance of diplomatic solutions over military escalation.
Barrack acknowledged the challenges in US-Iran relations, identifying a lack of trust as a major obstacle and suggesting that a modified version of the Islamabad understanding could foster renewed negotiations. He also commented on the US's history of military interventions in the Middle East, noting that attempts to change regimes have often failed.
In terms of Syria, Barrack praised the political transition following the fall of Bashar al-Assad's government and advocated for an end to Israeli military operations in the country. He emphasized dialogue and economic recovery as essential to reducing regional tensions, arguing that military force alone cannot provide lasting solutions.
