Turkey Aims to Strengthen Energy Diplomacy at COP31

Antalya:As Turkey prepares to host the 31st UN Climate Change Conference (COP31) in November, the country aims to enhance its role in energy and climate diplomacy. The event, scheduled from November 9 to 20, will focus on turning global climate targets into actionable plans and leveraging Turkey's renewable energy potential through international partnerships.

According to Anadolu Agency – English, Turkey will hold the COP31 Presidency and lead the Action Agenda, while Australia will serve as President of Negotiations. The conference will provide an opportunity to showcase Turkey's diplomatic capabilities and its position in the energy transition and climate policies on the international stage.

Turkey's strategy for the summit emphasizes converting existing climate commitments into measurable outcomes through dialogue and consensus. Key focus areas include the transition to clean energy, green industrialization, climate-resilient cities, and climate finance. The COP31 Presidency has set ambitious goals, such as increasing the share of electricity in global energy consumption and reducing energy intensity in buildings.

Turkey's renewable energy resources, particularly solar and wind, form the basis for potential partnerships at COP31. The country aims to expand its renewable energy capacity to 120 gigawatts by 2035. This expansion is expected to propel Turkey's clean energy investments through international financing and technology partnerships.

Turkey's geographic location at the intersection of Europe, the Middle East, and Asia positions it strategically for regional energy cooperation. This location offers opportunities for partnerships in electricity interconnections, renewable energy investment, and low-carbon industry.

Murat Dilek, President of the Global Energy Association, highlighted the opportunity to expand Turkey's manufacturing capacity for renewable energy equipment. He noted that this expansion could enhance Turkey's competitiveness in the global clean energy market and strengthen its role in international supply chains. Dilek emphasized the need for Turkey to implement its national climate targets and facilitate access to climate finance to achieve lasting gains in the global green transition.
