UN Criticizes Killing of Disabled Syrian Civilian by Israeli Forces

Jamla:Damascus UN Deputy Special Envoy for Syria, Claudio Cordone, has condemned the killing of a Syrian civilian with a disability by Israeli forces in the southern province of Daraa. Cordone called for Israel to respect Syria's sovereignty and territorial integrity.

According to Anadolu Agency – English, Cordone expressed his condolences to the family of the victim, Muath Salama al-Baeer, on social media platform X. He deplored the incident, emphasizing the need for Israel to adhere to international law.

The incident occurred during an Israeli military incursion into the village of Jamla in Daraa province. A relative of al-Baeer stated that he had a hearing disability, which prevented him from responding to Israeli soldiers' commands. The Israeli military acknowledged the shooting, noting that it happened after a person approached their forces and ignored warnings. The event is currently under review.

The killing takes place amid ongoing Israeli military operations in southern Syria, specifically in Daraa and Quneitra provinces. Reports suggest that Israeli forces have recently entered villages in Quneitra, conducting raids and military activities near civilian areas.

Since the fall of Bashar al-Assad's government in December 2024, Israel has increased its military presence in southern Syria, including occupying the UN-monitored buffer zone established under the 1974 disengagement agreement. Damascus has consistently condemned these incursions as violations of its sovereignty and has called for the withdrawal of Israeli forces from its territory.
