Qatar and US Officials Discuss Regional Tensions and Maritime Navigation

Doha:Qatar's Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani held discussions with US Secretary of State Marco Rubio regarding regional developments and efforts to reduce tensions. The conversation, which took place via phone on Thursday, was detailed by Qatar's Foreign Ministry.

According to Anadolu Agency – English, the ministry's statement highlighted that the two officials explored ways to strengthen the strategic partnership between Qatar and the US, alongside reviewing bilateral relations.

The dialogue between Sheikh Mohammed and Rubio also focused on ongoing diplomatic efforts and joint coordination aimed at de-escalating tensions, enhancing regional security, and promoting stability. Sheikh Mohammed reiterated Qatar's support for diplomatic initiatives to ensure freedom of maritime navigation, seeking a comprehensive agreement for lasting peace in the region.

The US State Department noted that Rubio emphasized Washington's commitment to Qatar's security and the freedom of navigation through the Strait of Hormuz. He also expressed gratitude for Doha's ongoing mediation efforts and its strong partnership in fostering a secure region.

These discussions occur amidst ongoing tensions over maritime navigation through the Strait of Hormuz, a crucial channel for global oil and liquefied natural gas supplies.
