Gaza:Gaza's hospitals are facing an imminent risk of power outages as their supplies of oil, essential for operating electricity generators, have been depleted, warned the Health Ministry on Wednesday. The ministry cautioned that the failure of these generators could severely disrupt critical and life-saving medical services.
According to Anadolu Agency – English, the remaining generators are currently functioning under "complex engineering and technical conditions" and are at risk of immediate mechanical failure. The shutdown of these generators would severely impact power supplies to numerous vital departments and units that provide essential care.
The Health Ministry highlighted that hospitals in Gaza require over 2,500 liters of oil each month to maintain generator operations. It has repeatedly cautioned that emergency solutions offering limited oil supplies are insufficient for prolonged operation, especially given the generators' extended usage and urgent maintenance requirements.
The ministry has called upon relevant parties to urgently fulfill their humanitarian responsibilities by ensuring the immediate entry of oil and spare parts necessary to keep the generators operational. This plea comes as Gaza's healthcare system continues to face challenges amid extensive damage to its infrastructure and ongoing Israeli ceasefire violations, which have resulted in over 1,500 deaths in the past year.
Since October 2023, Israeli actions have resulted in the deaths of more than 74,000 Palestinians, injuries to 175,000 others, and the destruction or damage of approximately 90% of Gaza's infrastructure.
