Saudi Arabia Unveils 2026-27 Archaeology Season Focused on AlUla and Khaybar

Riyadh:Saudi Arabia has announced the launch of its 2026-27 Archaeology Season, concentrating efforts in the regions of AlUla and Khaybar. This initiative aims to advance research, excavation, and conservation in one of the nation's most significant archaeological areas.

According to Anadolu Agency – English, the Royal Commission for AlUla (RCU) stated that this season builds upon previous years of archaeological work, including research, excavation, documentation, and conservation. It seeks to further the understanding of the region's history and enhance Saudi expertise in archaeology and cultural heritage.

The program will include fieldwork, specialized studies, digital documentation, conservation, community engagement, and capacity building. This year's research will focus on various aspects such as early human presence, ancient Arabian kingdoms, oasis communities, travel and pilgrimage routes, environmental history, water management, inscriptions, and material culture.

At Hegra in AlUla, studies will investigate the ancient settlement center to gain insights into historical life at the site. The Dadan Archaeological Project will continue into its second phase, examining funerary and residential areas of AlUla's ancient centers. Research in Khaybar will explore the relationship between people and the oasis, spanning different historical periods, including the Neolithic and Islamic eras.

The program also highlights written heritage, with over 25,000 inscriptions documented in AlUla, and aims to explore material culture and daily life in past societies. Saudi university students will participate in various aspects of the program under expert supervision.

Community activities are planned to link archaeological research with local knowledge, supporting the preservation and development of AlUla and Khaybar as hubs for archaeological research and cultural exchange, aligning with Saudi Vision 2030.
