Israeli Opposition Leaders Criticize Netanyahu’s Leadership Amid Security Concerns

Jerusalem:Israeli opposition leaders Yair Lapid and Gadi Eisenkot have accused Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu of prioritizing his political survival over the country's interests. They criticized his government's record and handling of security warnings ahead of the elections scheduled for next Tuesday.

According to Anadolu Agency – English, Lapid posted on the US social media platform X, accusing the government of turning Israel's security into a "farce" and seeking scapegoats for its failures. He described the defense minister's statements as reckless and a gift to Israel's enemies, emphasizing the government's inability to govern and provide security.

Eisenkot, leader of the opposition Yashar party and a former Israeli army chief of staff, voiced concerns about Netanyahu and Katz remaining in power, stating it posed a threat to Israel's security. He criticized Katz for attempting to shift responsibility for potential attacks to political opponents.

The statements from opposition leaders come amid uncertainty about the elections and warnings of possible Iranian attacks on Israel or Israeli attacks against Iran. Netanyahu's current government, in power since December 2022, is described as the most right-wing in Israel's history, with Netanyahu facing charges of corruption and being wanted by the International Criminal Court for war crimes in Gaza.
