Gaza:Gaza's Health Ministry has issued a warning that the electricity generators powering hospitals in the region may soon cease functioning. This alarming situation arises from the complete exhaustion of operating oil supplies due to the ongoing Israeli blockade of the enclave.
According to Anadolu Agency – English, the ministry has highlighted the dire conditions under which engineering teams are operating. They are striving to monitor and maintain electricity supply to critical hospital departments despite the lack of necessary resources. The continuous operation of generators without sufficient oil or maintenance has put them at significant mechanical risk. The ministry cautioned that if the generators' engines fail due to this oil shortage, they could become permanently unusable, even if oil supplies are restored later.
The ministry has made an urgent appeal for intervention, emphasizing that the crisis extends beyond securing operating oil to protecting the remaining generators from complete failure. They noted that over 2,500 liters (660 gallons) of oil are urgently needed each month to sustain the generators, which are crucial for hospital operations amid Israeli restrictions on the entry of operating and maintenance supplies.
In a related development, Gaza's Social Development Ministry raised concerns about the "catastrophic humanitarian consequences" for displaced Palestinians, resulting from the cessation of bakery operations due to restrictions on flour and essential food supply entries. The ministry described these restrictions as a violation of international humanitarian law and the Fourth Geneva Convention, accusing Israel of using food as a weapon against civilians.
The ongoing electricity crisis in Gaza has been exacerbated since the sole power plant stopped operating on October 11, 2023, leading to a complete blackout. Despite a ceasefire agreement being in place since October 10, 2025, Israeli restrictions have continued to impede the rehabilitation of Gaza's health system, forcing hospitals to rely heavily on generators for life-saving medical equipment.
