Sergen Yalcin Appointed as 48th Head Coach of Turkish National Football Team

Istanbul:Sergen Yalcin has been appointed as the 48th head coach of the Turkish national football team, following the departure of Vincenzo Montella. The Turkish Football Federation (TFF) announced the appointment on Tuesday, highlighting Yalcin's four-year contract to lead the national side.

According to Anadolu Agency – English, Yalcin becomes the 27th Turkish head coach in the team's 103-year history, which has seen 47 head coaches across 658 matches, including 26 Turkish and 21 foreign managers. The national team has been managed by various coaches from different nationalities, including Hungarians, Italians, Englishmen, Yugoslavs, Romanians, Germans, as well as a Scottish, an Irish, and a Dutch coach.

Yalcin is well-known for his playing career, particularly at Besiktas, where he was a fan favorite. He also played for other major Turkish clubs and earned 37 international caps, scoring five goals for Türkiye. As a manager, Yalcin has had successful stints with several clubs, including Besiktas, where he won the Turkish Super Lig and Turkish Cup.

Fatih Terim remains a significant figure in the team's history, having overseen the most matches and recorded the most wins for Türkiye. His notable achievements include leading the team to the semifinals at EURO 2008. Other notable coaches like Mustafa Denizli and Senol Gunes have also guided the team to significant accomplishments, such as the 2002 FIFA World Cup third-place finish.

Vincenzo Montella's tenure, which included leading Türkiye to the 2026 FIFA World Cup and a quarterfinal appearance at EURO 2024, ended after a series of underwhelming results in the UEFA Nations League A and the World Cup group stage. The TFF's decision to appoint Yalcin marks a new chapter for the national team as they look to build on past successes.
