Madrid:Spain's National Sports Council (CSD) has taken action against LaLiga President Javier Tebas by referring him to the country's Administrative Sports Tribunal (TAD). This move comes after Tebas made remarks comparing Real Madrid TV's communication methods to Nazi propaganda.
According to Anadolu Agency – English, the CSD acted on its own initiative, requesting the tribunal to evaluate whether Tebas' statements might constitute a violation of Article 76.4.b of Spain's 1990 Sports Law. This article categorizes public acts that undermine sporting dignity or decorum as serious infractions.
Tebas' controversial comparison involved likening Real Madrid TV's communication strategy to the propaganda techniques used by Joseph Goebbels, the propaganda minister of Nazi Germany, in a post on the US social media platform X on October 16. He clarified that his comparison was directed at communication techniques and not the Nazi ideology or Real Madrid supporters.
Real Madrid responded to Tebas' remarks by condemning them as unacceptable and calling for his immediate resignation from his roles as LaLiga president and vice president of the Spanish Football Federation. CSD President Jose Manuel Rodriguez Uribes also criticized the comparison, urging Tebas to apologize to the club.
In response to the referral, Tebas accused the CSD of neglecting to address Real Madrid's repeated allegations against LaLiga and Spanish refereeing. He asserted that defending the competition includes responding to those who discredit it, stating on X, "It's part of my responsibility. And I'm going to keep exercising it."
The tribunal is set to assess whether there are grounds for disciplinary proceedings. Possible penalties for serious infractions include warnings, fines, or suspension.
