Elon Musk’s Starlink Slowdown Causes Alarm in Ukraine Amid Conflict with Russia

Kyiv:Washington Elon Musk's decision to slow down a military-grade version of Starlink, utilized by Ukrainian forces, has reportedly led to panic in Kyiv and confusion within the Trump administration. The slowdown has affected the operational capability of Ukraine's military drones, according to a report by The Wall Street Journal.

According to Anadolu Agency – English, Musk imposed a cap on the speeds of the Starlink satellite internet service used by Ukraine, which has reportedly rendered some military drones ineffective. This decision came amid tensions between Musk, President Donald Trump, and Ukraine, particularly following Ukraine's attacks on Russian diesel refineries, which have been linked to rising oil prices.

The report indicates that both Musk and Trump discussed the slowdown before and after it became public, although Trump denied any direct involvement in the decision. Musk has suggested that the US military and ultimately the President of the United States decide on such limitations, whereas Trump has expressed uncertainty about the responsible party.

US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth clarified that the US has not issued directives regarding Starlink's service terms, leaving the decision to Starlink itself. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky warned that the restricted service could result in Ukrainian casualties if not restored.

The Starlink slowdown, which began on October 14, has been perceived by Ukrainian officials as potentially orchestrated by Trump or Musk, especially following statements from the Trump administration that were critical of Ukraine. Despite some US officials asserting that Musk acted independently, others noted discussions between Musk and senior administration officials, including Trump, prior to implementing the speed cap.
