Istanbul:Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan criticized Israel on Friday for its daily violations of the ceasefire in Gaza, stating that these actions undermine trust in the international system and foster an atmosphere of distrust.
According to Anadolu Agency – English, Fidan made these remarks during the opening of the 9th Istanbul Mediation Conference. He noted that the occupation in Gaza and the West Bank persists and is often met with impunity, emphasizing the importance of ensuring humanitarian aid access and prioritizing the protection of children.
Fidan reiterated that the Israel-Palestine conflict requires a 'just political solution' and explained that Turkey's mediation efforts are based on the consent of the parties involved, mutual trust, and inclusiveness. He cited Turkey's successful mediation in Libya as an example of how these principles can build confidence among conflicting parties.
The foreign minister also mentioned Turkey's strategic dialogue efforts in other regions, including Russia-Ukraine talks, the Black Sea grain deal, and the Ankara process between Somalia and Ethiopia, stressing that open channels and continued dialogue are crucial for lasting solutions.
Fidan highlighted the recently signed Mecca defense agreement, involving Turkey, Pakistan, and Saudi Arabia, as an initiative aimed at securing regional peace and prosperity. He also mentioned the potential of the Balkans Peace Platform to transform dialogue into practical outcomes.
He concluded by stating that Turkey aims to elevate mediation from a diplomatic tool to a strategic discipline, focusing on creating conditions for parties to reach their own agreements, rather than imposing outcomes.
