Netanyahu Predicts End to US Military Aid to Israel as Inevitable

Jerusalem:Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced that the cessation of US military assistance to Israel is "only a matter of time." In his statement on Friday, Netanyahu emphasized the need for Israel to prepare for the end of US military aid, which amounts to tens of billions of dollars.

According to Anadolu Agency – English, Netanyahu made these remarks during an interview with Israel's business broadcaster Channel 10, just days before the upcoming elections. He highlighted the importance of preparing for possible economic and banking sanctions by exploring alternative financial technologies.

Netanyahu indicated that the change in American sentiment towards military aid was inevitable due to opposition within the US, linked to Israel's activities in Gaza and its treatment of Palestinians. Although he did not specify a timeline or announce any formal decision by the US, Netanyahu urged for readiness in the face of potential future developments.

The Prime Minister also addressed the potential for economic sanctions, suggesting that Israel must develop alternative mechanisms to circumvent such challenges. He mentioned the exploration of blockchain technology as a possible solution to deal with economic sanctions.

Opposition leader Yair Golan of the Democrats party criticized Netanyahu's comments, describing him as out of touch with reality. Golan stressed the need to address "Jewish terrorism" and maintain strategic alliances to prevent sanctions. He advocated for a government change in the upcoming elections, targeting Netanyahu and key figures in his coalition.

The discussion on US-Israel relations and the potential consequences of economic sanctions comes as Israel approaches its parliamentary elections. The current aid agreement with the US, which provides $38 billion over ten years, is set to expire in 2028. Netanyahu has previously expressed a desire to reduce reliance on US military aid and invest in Israel's domestic defense capabilities.
