Barcelona:Spanish police intervened after protests organized by young people in Barcelona escalated into violence. The protests took place in Catalonia Square, where hundreds of youths, clad in black, gathered following a social media call using the Catalan-language hashtag "Institut Indignats," inspired by the Lycees Indignes movement in France.
According to Anadolu Agency – English, some demonstrators engaged in looting, set trash containers on fire, and hurled stones and bottles at security personnel, prompting police action. The protesters eventually dispersed into smaller groups, leading to clashes on side streets. Reports indicate there were injuries and detentions during the confrontations.
The incidents occurred near a protest camp established weeks ago to demand housing rights, amidst large numbers of residents and tourists. In response to the unrest, Barcelona's municipal police, the Guardia Urbana, announced street closures in the city center, and many shops lowered their shutters as a precaution.
Salvador Illa, president of the Catalan regional government, condemned the violence and vandalism. He stated, "An attack, a threat or an act of causing damage is not a democratic right. Anyone who does this will pay the price." Illa emphasized that violence has no place in Catalonia and is unjustifiable.
