Athens:Vangelis Liolios has resigned as president of the Hellenic Basketball Federation (EOK) amid an ongoing investigation into alleged match-fixing, bribery, and violations of sports legislation. The resignation comes as Greek media reports intensify around the inquiry.
According to Anadolu Agency – English, the federation's board held an emergency meeting and unanimously appointed Angelos Papanikolaou as the new president. Liolios was among six individuals arrested last Wednesday in connection with the investigation.
Liolios resigned while appearing before an investigating magistrate, expressing his desire to allow the judicial process to continue without interference and to enable the Greek basketball community to progress. During his testimony, which lasted approximately three and a half hours, Liolios denied all allegations.
The EOK had previously announced that it was in "a state of absolute and constant alert," closely monitoring the situation and promising to take necessary institutional actions. Papanikolaou, who was a contender in the 2021 presidential election, eventually joined the EOK board in 2025 as part of Liolios' team.
