Libya Opens Al-Rashad Gas Field to Boost Energy Supply

Brega:Libya has inaugurated the Al-Rashad gas field, located south of the eastern city of Brega, with an output capacity of up to 50 million cubic feet per day. This development is part of a strategic initiative to enhance gas supplies for power plants and industrial sectors.

According to Anadolu Agency – English, the National Oil Corporation (NOC) announced the opening of the field during a ceremony that coincided with the 65th anniversary of Libya's first crude oil shipment. NOC Chairman Masoud Suleiman emphasized the significance of this new production in bolstering the oil and gas sector, ensuring a steady supply of gas to meet domestic energy requirements.

The Al-Rashad gas field is expected to play a crucial role in Libya’s energy infrastructure. The country exported its maiden crude oil shipment through the Brega oil terminal on October 25, 1961, initiating its journey into international crude oil markets. Currently, Libya produces approximately 2.4 billion cubic feet of natural gas daily, with proven reserves estimated between 53 trillion and 80 trillion cubic feet.

Libya exports a portion of its natural gas to Europe via pipelines while using the remainder to generate electricity and support its industrial needs domestically.
