Cairo:UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres met with Arab League Secretary-General Nabil Fahmy in Cairo to discuss regional developments, focusing on promoting peace through dialogue and enhancing cooperation between the United Nations and the Arab League.
According to Anadolu Agency – English, the discussions centered on advancing peace through dialogue and reinforcing cooperation for stability and sustainable development across the Arab region. Guterres also conferred with the UN country team in Egypt and regional directors about the UN's work with the Egyptian government and support for individuals affected by humanitarian crises in Gaza and Sudan.
Egypt currently hosts many Palestinians who have left the Gaza Strip, as well as Sudanese refugees who fled the conflict that erupted in Sudan in April 2023. Estimates from a 2025 UNICEF report suggest that more than 1.2 million Sudanese have arrived in Egypt since the conflict began, adding to the approximately 5 million Sudanese already residing in the country before the war.
Guterres's visit to Cairo is part of diplomatic efforts to de-escalate tensions between the US and Iran, aiming for a diplomatic resolution to the conflict in collaboration with Egypt and other regional and international partners. He emphasized the need to end the expansion of war, protect civilians, and create conditions conducive to diplomacy and peace.
