RSF Drone Strikes Cause Widespread Blackout in Southeastern Sudan

Khartoum:Drone attacks by the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) have severely damaged five power substations, leading to a complete blackout across southeastern Sudan, as reported by the Sudan Electricity Holding Company on Monday.

According to Anadolu Agency – English, the drone strikes targeted substations in Singa, Al-Hawata, Al-Faw, Mashkur, and Al-Junaid, causing significant damage and cutting electricity from the southeastern grid affecting Sennar, Gedaref, White Nile, and Gezira states.

The Sudan Electricity Holding Company warned that the attacks pose a threat to the stability of the national electricity grid. Engineering and technical teams have been dispatched to assess the damage and commence repairs to restore electricity and stabilize the grid swiftly.

In addition, the daily Sudan Tribune reported that an RSF drone strike at the Al-Junaid substation in eastern Gezira state knocked it out of service, cutting off electricity to the area. Attempts were also made by RSF drones to strike strategic fuel depots in Umm Aliyla, but they caused no damage.

The state government in Sennar confirmed that an RSF drone attack on the Singa power substation resulted in material damage and injuries to the facility's guard team. Similar drone strikes targeted the Al-Faw and Al-Hawata substations in Gedaref state, and the Mashkur substation in White Nile state, leading to local power outages.

The RSF has escalated drone attacks against fuel storage facilities and electricity infrastructure in various states amid ongoing conflict with army forces. The war between the army and RSF, ongoing since April 2023, has resulted in significant casualties and displacement, contributing to a severe humanitarian crisis.
