Belgrade:A student-led movement has emerged victorious in Serbia's snap parliamentary election, marking a significant challenge to the long-standing political dominance of President Aleksandar Vucic. The Student List, a group of candidates chosen by university assemblies, has yet to announce its choice for prime minister despite its electoral success.
According to Anadolu Agency – English, the movement came into prominence after a tragic incident at Novi Sad railway station, where a collapsed concrete canopy resulted in 16 deaths. This disaster triggered widespread protests, highlighting issues of corruption and inadequate oversight. The subsequent student-led demonstrations demanded accountability and significant political change.
The Student List, which comprises academics, doctors, artists, farmers, and activists, was formed as a citizens' group rather than a traditional political party. Its campaign focused on tackling corruption and restoring public trust in state institutions. Despite winning 52.7% of the vote, the movement has not yet named a candidate for prime minister, although notable figures like cardiologist Ilija Srdanovic and former central bank governor Dejan Soskic have gained attention.
The movement's electoral platform includes an 11-point program aimed at fighting corruption, strengthening institutions, and improving living standards. Key proposals involve ensuring judicial independence, enhancing transparency in public procurement, and reforming media regulations. The Student List's victory signifies a potential shift in Serbia's political landscape, with the movement poised to form the next government and challenge Vucic's influence further.
