Riyadh:King Khalid International Airport in Riyadh has partially resumed flight operations after a suspension of approximately two weeks due to attacks by Yemen's Houthi group.
According to Anadolu Agency – English, the Saudi broadcaster Al Arabiya reported the return of flights, showcasing footage from inside two terminals that have reopened. Terminal 1 has resumed operations for domestic flights, while Terminal 2 is handling international flights operated by Saudi carriers. This resumption followed intensive coordination between the General Authority of Civil Aviation and security and technical agencies to ensure the airport's compliance with safety and security standards.
The resumption of operations is limited to the two terminals, with no announcement yet regarding a full return to operating capacity. The airport management has not issued a new statement on the resumption of flights beyond a Saturday notice, which announced the allocation of the two terminals for domestic and international services. Passengers with confirmed bookings have been advised to contact their airlines for the status of their flights before heading to the airport.
Flight operations were initially suspended following a Houthi attack on the airport on October 10, which resulted in the deaths of 13 people and injuries to more than 300. Despite the partial reopening, Houthi military spokesman Yahya Saree has renewed warnings to airlines, employees, and passengers against using the airport, declaring it a military target. He stated that Saudi authorities bear responsibility for reopening the airport and any ensuing consequences. The Houthis have been in control of Yemen's capital Sanaa and other regions since 2014 and have targeted Saudi aviation and energy sites amid resumed fighting with Saudi-backed government forces.
