Palestinian President Calls for Renewed Political Dialogue with Israel Following Elections

Nicosia:Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas expressed optimism on Thursday regarding the potential for renewed "serious political dialogue" with Israel following the formation of a new Israeli government. Abbas emphasized the importance of adhering to international resolutions to achieve peace.

According to Anadolu Agency – English, Abbas made these remarks during a joint news conference with Greek Cypriot leader Nikos Christodoulides. He highlighted the Palestinian commitment to peace through international resolutions, including those from the UN Security Council and General Assembly, as well as international law and human rights principles.

Abbas reiterated the Palestinian leadership's dedication to peaceful resistance and emphasized the pursuit of rights through legal and diplomatic means. He expressed hope that the new Israeli government would facilitate the resumption of dialogue aimed at achieving peace based on international legitimacy resolutions.

The comments came amid Israel's political uncertainty, with no clear governing majority emerging from the recent elections. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's bloc had secured 53 seats, while the opposition Change bloc held 48, and Arab parties had 19, leaving both short of the 61 seats needed to form a government.

Abbas also called for broader regional peace and expressed hope for the Greek Cypriot Administration's role in supporting peace efforts. He praised its support for Palestinian rights and stressed the importance of strengthening bilateral relations. Christodoulides reaffirmed his administration's commitment to resolving the Palestinian issue on the basis of UN resolutions and highlighted the need for cooperation to promote regional security.
