According to Anadolu Agency – English, President Frank-Walter Steinmeier expressed this stance during his visit to Beijing, addressing an audience at Peking University. He emphasized that Germany's goal, as part of Europe, is not to separate from China but to ensure mutual benefits from continued trade. Steinmeier highlighted the importance of dialogue in resolving sectoral imbalances and underscored the need for fair competition based on equitable rules.
Steinmeier further stated that Germany does not wish to see the world divided into opposing blocs, warning that such a division could threaten international security and lead to economic losses. He acknowledged China's desire to protect its economy from external shocks but cautioned that this should not translate into increased dependency and vulnerability for other countries.
In parallel comments, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz reiterated that Europe is not seeking a trade war with China, though it is committed to defending its industries against unfair practices. European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen has previously noted that the EU's trade deficit with China in 2025 has reached £1 billion ($1.12 billion) per day. Additionally, market shares of major German automakers have seen declines in Europe and China since 2021, with a significant drop in added value generated in Europe during the first half of the current year.
