Accra:A cyberattack on Binance, the world's largest cryptocurrency exchange, has highlighted the ongoing threat of cryptocurrency theft. Blockchain intelligence firm TRM Labs estimates that approximately $6.36 billion was transferred out of Binance wallets across 10 blockchains within about 20 minutes.
According to Anadolu Agency – English, TRM Labs attributed the operation with high confidence to TraderTraitor, a North Korean hacking group. Binance's preliminary investigation pointed to a potentially compromised laptop belonging to a DevOps engineer. The exchange has estimated the impact at around $6.3 billion, with about $3 billion in affected assets frozen.
Binance assured that user funds remain safe and pledged to cover losses through its Secure Asset Fund for Users and company funds. No evidence of leaked wallet private keys has been found, and the investigation is ongoing. This incident ranks among the largest reported cryptocurrency thefts, alongside other significant cases involving platforms like Bybit, Poly Network, and Ronin Network.
