Vessel Struck by Unknown Projectile in Strait of Hormuz, UK Maritime Agency Reports

Baku:London A vessel was reportedly hit by an unknown projectile in the Strait of Hormuz on Sunday, as reported by the UK Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) center. The incident has raised concerns over maritime security in this strategic region.

According to Anadolu Agency – English, the UKMTO center issued a warning notice stating that the master of a merchant vessel had relayed a Mayday distress call. This call, received over VHF Channel 16, reported that another vessel had been struck. The incident was documented at 1509GMT on November 1.

The UKMTO has advised vessels in the area to exercise caution and report any suspicious activities as authorities investigate the event. However, the agency has not identified the vessel involved or provided details regarding casualties, damage, or the origins of the projectile.

In October, there were multiple attacks on commercial tankers in the Gulf, the Strait of Hormuz, and the Gulf of Oman, some of which resulted in fires and damage. These incidents have heightened concerns over shipping security, particularly in light of ongoing tensions between the US and Iran. The Strait of Hormuz remains a key passage for global oil and gas exports.

The US and Israel initiated a war against Iran on February 28, which was followed by a ceasefire in April. However, fighting resumed in July due to stalled diplomatic efforts to conclude the conflict.
