Iran Engages in Indirect Talks with US Through Mediators

Tehran:Iran announced ongoing exchanges of messages with the United States via mediators, emphasizing its revised diplomatic proposal that could be implemented within two days.

According to Anadolu Agency – English, Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baqaei stated that diplomatic contacts between Tehran and Washington are active, with Iran's existing proposal as the foundation for indirect negotiations. The proposal was discussed during an Iranian delegation's visit to New York, and Washington's views were received through mediators.

The revised seven-stage proposal, condensed for implementation in two days, is seen by Iran as a demonstration of goodwill and a constructive diplomatic approach. Baqaei expressed that this plan could facilitate the resumption of negotiations and the restoration of security in the Strait of Hormuz, contingent upon the US meeting Iran's demands.

Baqaei further revealed that Deputy Foreign Minister Kazem Gharibabadi visited Doha to assist in message exchanges between Tehran and Washington via Qatari mediation. He mentioned a recent US letter, stating that Iran's Supreme National Security Council would determine the response based on national interests, with the existing proposal remaining the framework for indirect talks.

While Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Qalibaf leads the latest negotiations, the Supreme National Security Council oversees the broader diplomatic process. Baqaei cautioned against renewed diplomatic efforts, referencing past negotiation breakdowns and US President Trump's dismissive remarks.

Iran demands the removal of US sanctions and the release of Iranian assets, following the perceived violations by Washington. On nuclear inspections, Baqaei noted that Iran has not resumed discussions with the IAEA, criticizing the agency's director for not condemning attacks on Iranian nuclear sites. He reiterated Iran's commitment to the NPT despite US military threats.

Regarding the US midterm elections, Baqaei stated that Tehran expects no significant change in US policy, emphasizing that Iran's diplomatic actions are guided by national interests. He stressed that trust between the two nations remains absent and insisted that Iran's core demands be addressed before advancing to other issues. The exchanges occur amid ongoing tensions over the US naval blockade and security in the Strait of Hormuz.
