Washington:A former senior US military official is facing a federal investigation over allegations of leaking classified information related to Ukraine and Iran. The individual in question, former Army Lt. Gen. Brett Sylvia, who held the position of the Pentagon's top military planner, is reportedly facing a possible court-martial following his recent dismissal by Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth.
According to Anadolu Agency – English, Sylvia's dismissal is part of a broader effort by the administration to curb unauthorized disclosures. An internal Pentagon report, cited by Axios, revealed that Sylvia allegedly failed four polygraph tests and admitted to the incidents during two video-recorded interviews.
The investigation suggests that Sylvia shared sensitive information with Wall Street Journal reporter Michael Gordon, including specifics about US military aid to Ukraine, ammunition stockpiles, and high-level discussions concerning Iran. Sylvia allegedly used notes from reviewing a classified document to brief Gordon, despite lacking the required authorization.
Furthermore, Sylvia is accused of deleting an entire message thread with Gordon on the encrypted messaging app Signal after receiving a message he believed was related to Iran. This action reportedly erased messages and calls from his personal phone. Additionally, Sylvia allegedly engaged in at least one unauthorized conversation with New York Times reporter Greg Jaffe concerning Hegseth's removal of senior military leaders.
The report indicates that Sylvia's dismissal is only the beginning of the accountability measures being taken. A source quoted by Axios emphasized the administration's firm stance against leaks, stating, "The president (Donald Trump) has no tolerance for leakers."
