US Approves Qatar-Mediated Draft Deal with Iran

Washington:The United States has given approval to a draft memorandum of understanding with Iran, which was presented by Qatari mediators. Sources familiar with the development confirmed this approval on Tuesday.

According to Anadolu Agency – English, the mediation team also briefed Saudi Arabia and the UAE on the memorandum, and both countries have given their approval as well. The discussions involve concessions from both the United States and Iran regarding Iran's nuclear program and frozen assets. Specifically, Tehran is expected to announce a concession on its nuclear program while Washington will announce the release of part of Iran's frozen assets. These announcements are planned to be made simultaneously.

Further discussions are ongoing to arrange the simultaneous announcement of the agreement, including initial steps and the announcement of an interim deal. This interim deal is expected to pave the way for renewed negotiations between the two countries.

Tensions in the Middle East have been high since attacks by the US and Israel on Iran in February, which led to retaliatory actions by Tehran. A ceasefire agreement was eventually reached in April. Previously, Washington and Tehran had signed a memorandum of understanding on freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz on June 18, but its implementation was stalled due to security disagreements in the strait.
