Nineveh: Iraq's Popular Mobilization Forces (PMF) reported on Thursday that two airstrikes targeted one of its units located in the northern province of Nineveh. In an official statement shared by the Iraqi News Agency, the PMF specified that the airstrikes impacted the 4th Regiment of the 14th Brigade, which operates under the Nineveh Operations Command. Despite describing the strikes as 'treacherous,' the group confirmed that there were no human casualties.
According to Anadolu Agency, the statement did not disclose further details concerning the origin of the strikes or the extent of material damage inflicted. The PMF, a state-sanctioned Iraqi security and military umbrella, was established in 2014 following a religious edict by Grand Ayatollah Ali al-Sistani to combat the ISIS terrorist group. By 2016, the PMF was formally incorporated into Iraq's armed forces.
The United States has accused certain factions within the PMF of maintaining ties with Iran. Iraqi groups under the banner of the 'Islamic Resistance in Iraq' have previously claimed responsibility for attacks on US bases in the region. Since February 28, the US and Israel have conducted an ongoing air offensive against Iran, resulting in the deaths of over 1,340 individuals, including the then-Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei.
In response, Iran has launched drone and missile strikes targeting Israel, as well as Jordan, Iraq, and Gulf countries that host US military facilities. These retaliatory actions have led to casualties, infrastructure damage, and have disrupted global markets and aviation.
