Algiers: Algerian football fans are expressing optimism about their national team's potential performance at the 2026 World Cup. Algeria, known as the Desert Warriors, has been placed in Group J along with defending champion Argentina, Austria, and Jordan. The 23rd edition of the World Cup will commence on Thursday across the US, Canada, and Mexico, featuring 48 teams that will compete in 104 matches over 39 days.
According to Anadolu Agency, Algerian supporters are hopeful that their team can reach the semifinals of the tournament, buoyed by a cohesive group of players who are active in top-level leagues. The Algerian team is set to begin its World Cup campaign against Argentina on June 17. Anani Belhamissi, an enthusiastic fan in his 60s, expressed confidence in the team's ability to progress. He highlighted the strong support and motivation the team receives from the Algerian populace, including backing from the presidency. Belhamissi emphasized that with the support of over 40 million Algerians, the team is expected to qualify from the first round with ease.
Algeria is making its fourth appearance in the World Cup, having previously competed in Mexico in 1986, South Africa in 2010, and Brazil in 2014. Mohamed Kenfoud, another optimistic supporter, noted that Algeria's team comprises high-level players. He believes that reaching the semifinals is within reach, potentially surpassing Morocco's achievement in the previous tournament where they became the first Arab and African team to reach the semifinals.
Omar Shellabi echoed similar sentiments, asserting that Algeria possesses its best generation of players, with many squad members competing in top-tier leagues. He is confident in the team's abilities and tactics to make significant progress. However, a younger fan, Fares Cherfaoui, expressed reservations about reaching the semifinals, citing the fierce competition and advanced levels of play, particularly from European and Latin American teams.
Samir Bourbika, an elderly fan, remains hopeful, emphasizing Algeria's experience and background as key factors in positioning the team to perform well and bring joy to Algerians. This World Cup marks the first time the tournament will feature 48 teams, expanding from the previous 32-team format used in Qatar.
The opening match of the tournament will be played on Thursday between Mexico and South Africa at Mexico's Azteca Stadium, with the final scheduled for July 19 at MetLife Stadium in New York.
