All Eyes on Standing Committee Amid Probe Against 2 Chinese Generals

Beijing: The Standing Committee of China's National People's Congress (NPC) is all set to meet in Beijing on Wednesday amid a high-level probe against two top Chinese military generals.

According to Anadolu Agency, the 59th meeting of the Council of Chairpersons of the 14th NPC Standing Committee had decided on Monday to hold its 20th session in Beijing on February 4, as per an official statement. It was noted that the Standing Committee will review the report of the Credentials Committee on the qualifications of individual deputies.

The review follows China's Defense Ministry announcement on January 24 that General Zhang Youxia and General Liu Zhenli were put under investigation for "suspected serious discipline and law violations." Whether the Standing Committee will deliberate on the fate of these two generals remains uncertain.

The generals in question are among the seven members of the Chinese Communist Party's Central Military Commission (CMC), which is led by President Xi Jinping. With the recent investigation, the CMC is now left with only two active members, including Xi and Zhang Shengmin, who serves as the secretary of the commission's discipline inspection body.

General He Weidong, General Li Shangfu, and Admiral Miao Hua have been investigated and removed from the CMC in recent months. Zhang is not only a member of the Communist Party of China's Political Bureau but also serves as vice chairman of the CMC. Liu is a member of the CMC and chief of staff of the CMC Joint Staff Department.

These developments are part of a larger crackdown, with about 30 Chinese senior military officials having been investigated or removed since 2023, coinciding with Xi's unprecedented third term.
