Tiruvallur: An ammonia gas leak at a private seafood processing unit in the southern Indian state of Tamil Nadu has resulted in the deaths of seven workers and left over 70 others hospitalized, as reported by local officials.

According to Anadolu Agency, the incident took place at a seafood factory located in the Tiruvallur district. The state's Chief Minister, C. Joseph Vijay, shared a statement on the US social media platform X, confirming the occurrence of the ammonia leak. Public broadcaster All India Radio further reported that the incident led to the death of seven factory workers, while more than 70 were admitted to the hospital for treatment.

In response to the crisis, the National Disaster Response Force, along with specialized teams trained in chemical, biological, and nuclear emergencies, initiated a rescue operation. These teams worked swiftly under strict safety protocols to contain the leak and mitigate its impact.

The tragic incident drew a response from Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who expressed his sorrow over the accident. In a message shared by his office on X, Modi conveyed his condolences to the families affected by the tragedy.
