Arab Nations Condemn Colombia’s Embassy Opening in West Jerusalem

Jerusalem:Amman Jordan, Saudi Arabia, and Algeria have issued statements condemning Colombia's decision to open an embassy in West Jerusalem, asserting that it violates international law and undermines the city's legal and historical status.

According to Anadolu Agency, the Jordanian Foreign Ministry expressed a strong rejection of the move, emphasizing that any attempts to alter the status or legal standing of Jerusalem are considered "null and void, illegitimate and without legal effect." The ministry reiterated that a just and comprehensive peace can only be achieved through the establishment of an independent, sovereign Palestinian state along the June 4, 1967, lines, with East Jerusalem as its capital.

Saudi Arabia's Foreign Ministry also criticized Colombia's decision, labeling it a "blatant violation of international law and relevant international resolutions." The Saudi statement underscored that the move contradicts the established international view regarding Jerusalem's status. Riyadh called upon the international community, including the UN Security Council, to take immediate action to stop "illegal Israeli policies" that threaten the chances for a just and lasting peace.

Algeria echoed these sentiments, describing the embassy opening as a flagrant violation of international law. The Algerian Foreign Ministry warned that the decision could jeopardize the two-state solution and escalate regional tensions, urging the international community to act decisively against efforts to alter the reality in the occupied Palestinian territories.

The Palestinian Foreign Ministry also condemned the move earlier on Wednesday, urging Colombia to reverse its decision, citing violations of international law and UN resolutions.

Historically, Colombia had informed the United Nations in 1980 that it would relocate its diplomatic mission from Jerusalem to Tel Aviv in compliance with Security Council Resolution 478. However, this decision was reversed with the recent opening of the embassy in Jerusalem, joining other countries like the United States and Guatemala that have embassies in the city.

Jerusalem remains a contentious issue, central to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, with Israel claiming the entire city as its capital and Palestinians viewing East Jerusalem as the capital of a future Palestinian state.
