Baku: Argentina's President Javier Milei on Wednesday ordered his negotiators to withdraw from the COP29 UN Climate Change Conference in Baku, Azerbaijan, according to press reports. The delegates attending the summit were instructed to suspend their activities only three days into the conference and return to Buenos Aires immediately, as reported by the British daily The Guardian. According to Anadolu Agency, Milei has previously referred to the climate crisis as a "socialist lie" and during his 2023 election campaign, he threatened to withdraw Argentina from the Paris Agreement, although he has since backtracked on that statement. COP29, which began this week in the Azerbaijan capital, is scheduled to run through November 22. Argentina's abrupt departure, coupled with the stance of incoming US President Donald Trump, who has also labeled the climate crisis as a 'Chinese hoax' and pledged to dismantle green economy initiatives, has caused concern among climate activists. There is growing apprehension that these developments may undermine global efforts to limit the rise in temperature to below 1.5 degrees Celsius.
