Australia to Acquire Second-Hand Submarines Under Revised AUKUS Agreement

Ankara: Australia will purchase three second-hand nuclear-powered submarines as part of a revised AUKUS military deal, Defense Minister Richard Marles announced. The decision marks a shift from the original agreement established in 2021, which included at least one new Virginia-class submarine. Marles emphasized the financial benefits of acquiring only second-hand submarines, highlighting the "significant" cost savings.

According to Anadolu Agency, the original deal involved a mix of new and used Virginia-class submarines. However, Marles confirmed that the revised agreement will see Australia acquiring only second-hand submarines from the United States. This adjustment aims to streamline supply-chain management, simplify operational and maintenance requirements, and maximize cost efficiencies, as stated in a joint announcement by the US, UK, and Australia.

The AUKUS alliance, which involves the US, UK, and Australia, is considered vital for bolstering defense capabilities. In support of the project, the UK has committed £4 billion ($5.3 billion), while the US has pledged $17.5 billion. Australia has allocated more than 30 billion Australian dollars ($20.7 billion) for the initiative.
