Darwin:An Australian Army soldier was killed and five others were injured during a military training exercise in the Northern Territory, authorities announced Tuesday. The incident happened Monday at the Mount Bundey Training Area, southeast of Darwin.
According to Anadolu Agency, the Defence Department has not disclosed the details of the incident or the conditions of the injured soldiers. However, it was reported that the soldier who died in the vehicle rollover was identified as Corporal Brendan Hannam.
Prime Minister Anthony Albanese expressed condolences to Corporal Hannam's family, friends, and colleagues, and wished the injured personnel a swift recovery. He remarked on the inherent risks faced by military personnel and their families, underscoring the challenges they endure.
Local media indicated that a military vehicle accident was involved in the incident. Emergency services responded to the scene Monday afternoon, and the injured were taken to Royal Darwin Hospital.
The Mount Bundey Training Area, approximately 100 kilometers southeast of Darwin, is utilized by the Australian Army and allied forces for live-fire training. A similar fatality occurred at the facility during a live-fire exercise in 2017.
