Beijing Seeks Luxembourg’s Support in Strengthening China-Europe Ties.

Beijing: In a strategic move to bolster China-Europe relations, Beijing has called upon Luxembourg to play a pivotal role in fostering cooperation between China and the European Union. During a meeting held on Monday in Beijing, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi engaged in discussions with Luxembourg's Foreign Minister Jean Asselborn, emphasizing the importance of partnership over rivalry between China and Europe. According to Anadolu Agency, the meeting highlighted the upcoming 50th anniversary of diplomatic relations between China and the EU in 2025, serving as a backdrop for Wang's remarks. He stressed the significance of maintaining strategic autonomy amidst rising unilateralism and protectionism, urging the EU to remain committed to its foundational intentions. Wang Yi expressed China's willingness to collaborate with Luxembourg to ensure the continued growth and stability of China-Europe relations. The appeal comes at a time when China-EU relations have faced significant challenges, both economically a nd politically. Earlier this year, in June, the European Commission announced additional customs duties of up to 38.1% on Chinese electric vehicles, illustrating the growing economic tensions. In a related development, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning commented on Lithuania's potential shift in diplomatic relations with China. Mao noted that China remains open to dialogue with Lithuania's incoming Prime Minister Gintautas Paluckas, following his remarks on restoring diplomatic ties after a trade dispute led to a downgrade in relations three years ago. Mao emphasized the importance of Lithuania adhering to the one-China principle and honoring political commitments made in establishing diplomatic relations. The spokesperson expressed hope for creating favorable conditions to normalize bilateral relations. The diplomatic dynamics between China and Lithuania have been complicated by Lithuania's formal operations in Taipei, Taiwan, which China claims as a 'breakaway province.' Despite China's stan ce, Taipei has asserted its independence since 1949, maintaining diplomatic relations with at least 12 nations. China responded to Lithuania's actions by downgrading diplomatic ties and recalling its ambassador from Vilnius, prompting Lithuania to adjust its diplomatic mission accordingly.
