Belgian Flotilla Activists Recount Alleged Israeli Custody Abuses

Brussels: Belgian nationals who were part of the Global Sumud Flotilla have returned home, recounting harrowing experiences of alleged violence and abuse during their interception and detention by Israeli forces. The flotilla, which aimed to break Israel's blockade on Gaza and deliver humanitarian aid, was stopped in international waters.

According to Anadolu Agency, the activists described their ordeal upon arrival at Brussels Airport after being released and traveling back via Trkiye. They reported being attacked and held in conditions they described as inhumane aboard a prison ship and later in a desert detention facility typically used for Palestinian prisoners.

The flotilla consisted of 428 people from 44 countries on 50 vessels, all of which were reportedly attacked by Israeli forces after departing from Trkiye. Julien Cabral, one of the activists, shared that their convoy faced two separate interception attempts, with the more aggressive one occurring after leaving the Turkish district of Marmaris. Cabral recounted being shot with a rubber bullet and enduring humiliations and beatings during detention.

Olimpia Diez Perlines, a 77-year-old activist, expressed disbelief at the treatment they received, describing it as systematic humiliation. She drew parallels between their experiences and the conditions faced by Palestinians in Israeli prisons. Perlines criticized European governments for their perceived lack of response and called for an end to trade relations with Israel.

Isja Puissant, another activist, detailed the dehumanizing treatment they underwent, including being searched, given numbers, and held without proper sleeping arrangements. He criticized European governments for their inaction and highlighted the ongoing plight of over 9,000 Palestinian prisoners. Puissant urged European leaders to take stronger action against Israel to address these issues.

The activists' accounts have raised serious concerns about human rights violations and have called on European governments to reevaluate their stance and relations concerning Israel's actions in international waters.
