Seattle:Bill Gates has issued a warning that artificial intelligence (AI) could lead to 20 years of economic and social disruption, affecting jobs and daily life even if the technology is well-managed.
According to Anadolu Agency – English, Gates discussed the potential impact of an AI-driven economy in an interview with the Decoder podcast. He highlighted that this transition could lead to significant shifts in employment, creating both winners and losers, and prompting society to reconsider the roles of individuals.
Gates, 70, expressed concern over the estimated 20-year transition period, noting the possibility of significant disruption. He emphasized that this timeline is a rough estimate and could vary based on technological advancements and decisions regarding the pace of development.
The Microsoft co-founder elaborated on how AI and humanoid robotics might eventually take over many tasks currently performed by humans, such as construction, agriculture, and even surgery. Despite these advancements potentially easing shortages, Gates suggested that certain sectors, like childcare, culinary arts, and sports, might remain human-centric by choice.
He also pointed out the potential advantages of AI in healthcare and agriculture while warning that current governmental and societal measures are insufficient to handle its swift evolution. Gates called for increased government oversight and the implementation of technical safeguards to mitigate risks like cyberattacks and biological threats, stressing that AI companies alone cannot shoulder these responsibilities.
Gates concluded that AI's development might usher in one of the most challenging eras in human history, urging society to make informed choices about its trajectory. Despite his grim forecast, he insisted on the importance of acknowledging these potential challenges rather than ignoring them.
