Bolivian Vice President Warns of Arrest Plot Amid Crackdown

Accra:Bolivian Vice President Edmand Lara has expressed fears for his safety, warning that authorities might arrest him on fabricated charges as part of a government crackdown on officials linked to corruption and drug trafficking.

According to Anadolu Agency, Lara claimed that he received warnings about a plan to fabricate evidence against him, endangering both his and his family's safety. He has called on the legislature, prosecutors, human rights organizations, and the international community to monitor his situation and ensure due process is respected.

This warning follows the arrest of Attorney General Roger Mariaca and 13 others, accused of being part of a criminal network within the judiciary and Public Prosecutor's Office. Interior Minister Marco Antonio Oviedo accused Mariaca of shielding drug traffickers, with the operation reportedly backed by information from the US Drug Enforcement Administration. Mariaca has denied these allegations.

Lara emphasized the importance of due process in Mariaca's case before issuing his own warning. Meanwhile, Washington revoked Mariaca's visa, alleging he accepted bribes to aid drug trafficking and criminals. Mariaca has disputed these claims.

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio has commended the arrests, viewing them as progress in tackling drug trafficking, corruption, and organized crime. While the government has not publicly connected Lara to this investigation, there has been no confirmation of charges or an arrest warrant against him.
