OAS Calls for Nicaragua to Release Political Prisoners and Hold Elections

Washington:The Organization of American States (OAS) has passed a resolution urging Nicaragua to uphold human rights, conduct free and fair elections, and release political prisoners without conditions. This resolution was adopted during the OAS's 31st Meeting of Consultation of Ministers of Foreign Affairs, held in Washington to address ongoing concerns about Nicaragua's political and human rights situation.

According to Anadolu Agency, the resolution calls on Nicaraguan authorities to restore fundamental freedoms and establish conditions for transparent and inclusive elections. It also demands the release of individuals detained for political reasons and emphasizes the importance of reinstating the separation of powers within the country.

Furthermore, the OAS statement highlights the need for Nicaragua to disclose the whereabouts of forcibly disappeared individuals and to restore the nationality of those who have been deprived of it. To address these issues, the OAS plans to create a task force to engage with Nicaraguan authorities and exiled citizens and to provide recommendations for potential further actions.

Critics of the Nicaraguan government argue that civil liberties have been increasingly restricted since a series of protests in 2018. Additionally, the government recently banned opposition groups from participating in future elections. In 2023, Nicaragua withdrew from the OAS, accusing it of being an instrument of US interventionism.
