Antalya: The number of British visitors to Trkiye is expected to reach a record 5 million this year, according to Britain's envoy to Ankara. Jill Morris, following a weeklong tour of the Turkish Riviera, emphasized the growth in British tourism to the country.
According to Anadolu Agency, Morris highlighted the significant increase from 3.3 million British visitors in 2023 to potentially 5 million this year. This surge is attributed to the expansion of Antalya Airport, which has increased its capacity to accommodate more passengers. The airport's expansion is seen as a major factor in attracting British tourists, with direct flights available from most major cities in the United Kingdom.
Antalya's appeal as a tourist destination is underscored by its long summer season, blue flag beaches, and crystal-clear waters. The expansion project at the airport, completed in April, nearly tripled its size, aiming to boost its passenger capacity to 82 million. This aligns with the nation's goal of attracting 61 million tourists this year, making Trkiye the fifth most popular tourist destination globally.
Morris also noted the diverse experiences Trkiye offers, including cultural, nature, sport, and gastronomy tourism, which continue to attract British visitors. The envoy praised the efforts in sustainability and infrastructure, pointing to the shared vision and cooperation between the UK and Trkiye in these areas.
The economic relationship between the two countries is robust, with trade expected to reach £26 billion in 2024. Recently, talks for a new Free Trade Agreement were announced, aiming to enhance the existing agreement by covering services, technology, and digital sectors. This initiative is expected to further strengthen bilateral ties and reduce business costs.
Trkiye's strategic role as a NATO ally was also highlighted. With its significant military presence, Trkiye plays a crucial role in Europe's security and defense, especially amid current geopolitical challenges. The upcoming NATO foreign ministers' meeting in Antalya will further discuss these priorities.
Antalya, aside from being a tourist hub, is a venue for major international events like the G20, NATO summits, and the annual Antalya Diplomacy Forum. Morris attended the forum recently, emphasizing its importance in promoting diplomacy in today's uncertain global climate. The presence of high-level representatives at the forum underscores the critical role diplomacy plays in addressing global challenges.
