Canada and Norway to Enhance Arctic and Defense Collaboration amid Ongoing Ukraine Conflict

Ottawa: Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney and Norwegian Premier Jonas Gahr St¸re engaged in a phone conversation on Friday to discuss the enhancement of cooperation in trade, defense, and Arctic security, as announced in a statement from Canada. The dialogue underscored the commitment of both nations to bolster commercial and strategic partnerships, particularly focusing on transatlantic and Arctic regions.

According to Anadolu Agency, St¸re extended his congratulations to Carney on his recent election victory. Both leaders highlighted their continued support for Ukraine's sovereignty and territorial integrity, emphasizing the importance of achieving a just and lasting peace amidst the ongoing conflict with Russia. The statement from Canada noted the prime ministers' agreement to maintain close contact.

Carney's outreach to Norway represents one of his initial diplomatic engagements since taking office in March. Norway, a NATO member with substantial Arctic territory, has played a crucial role in regional security cooperation, especially in the wake of Russia's 'special military operation' in Ukraine in 2022.
